Genetic Improvement Program

Predomar receives premium seabass and seabream juveniles from the mother company, Nireus, and pre-grows it to sizes especially fit for open-sea farming.

Nireus has 20 years of expertise in juvenile research and development. Since 2002, Nireus’ genetic improvement program is being implemented in cooperation with Akvaforsk (NOFIMA), the institute that developed similar programs for the farmed Atlantic salmon.

The program is based on the selection of families of known and recorded pedigree that combine desired traits and characteristics, i.e. growth rate, food conversion rate, color, fat content, filleting yield, shape, resistance to disease. The best brood fish from the program are selected to populate the commercial hatcheries of the Group’s companies.

The graph below shows the basic steps in our genetics selection program.
